Phase & Group Velocity
A wave packet is a superposition of many frequencies. The phase velocity vp = ω/k governs how fast individual crests travel; the group velocity vg = dω/dk governs how fast the packet envelope — and energy — travel. In a dispersive medium these differ, so crests visibly drift through the envelope. The view below is centred on the packet.
